Do You Want To Save On Your Taxes?
If you need to take the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from your IRA you can save significant taxes by making your charitable contributions from those withdrawals. This is especially true if you are receiving taxable Social Security benefits. In this situation, you are taxed up to 1.85 times the amount for federal taxes plus another 5+% for MA state tax.
You can avoid some of this tax by making Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD) from your IRA rather than another source. Your donation needs to be done by your IRA custodian directly to the 501 C3 organization of your choice which you can likely authorize by phone. It's even more beneficial for those of us who no longer itemize deductions. I make quarterly church pledge payments through Fidelity this way. A $4000 QCD donation could save more than $1300 in taxes. Please call Hal Woodbury at 978.657.7789 with any questions.

Outreach
"Provide fulfilling opportunities to serve others while growing in our faith and modeling Christian love"
Your Wilmington United Methodist Church (WUMC) Outreach Committee provides service opportunities throughout the year; monthly serving at St. Paul's Soup Kitchen in Lowell, providing much-needed school supplies in our annual Back Pack Attack benefiting The Wish Project, donation of gently used winter coats for all ages to be distributed to The Mission of Deeds in Reading and The Wish Project in Chelmsford.
The Outreach Committee's purchase of summertime meals for St. Paul's Soup Kitchen, 48 backpacks for our Back Pack Attack, and financial donations to numerous non-profit programs/agencies are funded through "fundraising events" such as Pasta Dinner in January, Pork Dinner in April/May, Yard Sale in June and our largest event, Christmas Tree Sales.
For event details, please go to this website's "Mission" tab for upcoming opportunities. None of our activities are possible without "YOUR" assistance. If you wish more information about Your Outreach Committee's activities, please contact Betsy Peterson, Committee Co-Chair at bpeter62@comcast.net or by calling 978.657.0355.
SEWING GROUP
Your WUMC Sewing Group meets the last Saturday of every month from 9:30 a.m. til noontime. Our projects include Little Dresses for Africa, sanitary items for girls also sent to areas in need, and tied fleece blankets distributed to The Wish Project in Chelmsford serving the Merrimack Valley area and The Mission of Deeds in Reading. You don't sew; not a problem! There is something for everyone; cutting dress patterns, ruffles, pockets, bias tape, or cutting fabrics needed for sanitary items or cutting and tying fleece blankets. So, bring your machine (if you want to sew) or a pair of sharp scissors and ruler for cutting; however, most importantly bring your willingness to help others less fortunate than ourselves.
We gather in Fellowship Hall or an alternate location if needed; any location change will be posted on the downstairs entrance doorway. If you have any questions, please contact Betsy Peterson at (978) 657-0355 or email bpeter62@comcast.net.

Social Concerns
The UMC Social Concerns committee oversees our congregation's efforts to address social justice issues in our church, denomination, community, state, nation, and world. Each year we select a handful of pressing topics to focus on, sponsoring discussions and activities to raise awareness around the UMC Social Principles and work to build a more just world.
WUMC is a Reconciling Congregation, welcoming all.
Welcoming Statement
We believe that all people are children of God and are of sacred worth. We affirm Christ's example of love without exclusion.
Therefore, we will welcome, nurture, and deal justly and compassionately with all, regardless of age, race, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, economic reality, gender expression, family status, physical ability or social standing as full participants in the work of Jesus Christ and this reconciling congregation.
We believe that through diversity all can grow and practice a unity of faith that transcends our differences.
In the full expression of the radically transforming and all-inclusive love of God, as revealed through Jesus Christ, all are welcome!
WUMC has an active Social Concerns committee that meets monthly and sponsors several events throughout the year.
Annual Events
Alternative Gift Fair - The Alternative Gift Fair is held in December, and offers a means of "de-consumerizing" while giving a thoughtful gift to friends or family. The various recipient organizations work to break the cycles of social injustice, poverty, discrimination, and violence.
Earth Day Celebration of God's Creation Art Exhibit - This annual event is held in the spring around Earth Day, displaying a variety of original artwork from our talented congregants and friends - from the youngest to our most senior. The exhibit is inspiring, thoughtful, and also drives home the need for us to do more to protect God's precious planet.

Stewardship
Defying Gravity: Break Free from the Culture of More
Program Overview
We all want to be generous, but most of us find this hard to accomplish. Demands on our time and money make scarcity a real problem. Marketing creates a compulsion to buy things that are new or the latest version of the old. Instead of enjoying the freedom to bless others with the best of our lives, we feel trapped. We are held down and held back by forces that seem beyond our control.
But there is good news! Jesus offers us a way to defy gravity and break free from the culture of more. Defying Gravity is a four-week stewardship program exploring what the Bible says about how to experience a generous life. Here are the topics we’ll be discussing:
Week 1
Discovering Gravity
(Matthew 19:16-26)
Week 2
Breaking Free
(Luke 15:11-32)
Week 3
Tethered to God
(Matthew 6:21)
Week 4
When We Get It Right
(Luke 16:10-13)
The key to all of it-and the key, I believe, to Christian discipleship-is generosity. When we follow Jesus, we develop a spirit of generosity that makes us eager to give. It’s not about should or ought to. It’s about want to. It’s about overflowing with love and the desire to bless others as Jesus blesses us.

Welcoming Committee
- A Reconciling Congregation Serving Wilmington, Burlington, and Billerica -
HELLO FROM THE WELCOMING COMMITTEE
Check out our welcoming kiosk in the downstairs entryway! On it are our "Welcome Home" folders for guests and visitors, a prayer jar, the conversation newsletter, a name tag request form, and college student information forms. Have you signed up to be a greeter yet this season? Please see Kris Stone to add your family to the greeter list.
Remember to spread the love of Jesus Christ by inviting your family and friends to worship with us. WELCOME HOME!
The Welcoming Committee is happy to accept new committee members for the upcoming year. Here are some of the things we do: Our committee updates the Welcoming Kiosk located at the bottom of the stairs. We place Welcome Home folders, a prayer jar, college student sign-up cards, a mug of pens, and a basket with the monthly "Conversation". The folders have brochures, a bookmark, a magnet, and a Christian education booklet inside that includes information about our church. We send "Welcome to our Church" postcards twice a year in the spring and fall. These are invitations to new residents of Wilmington, Burlington, and Billerica to attend one of our church services. We help with the September Rally Day (last year we served Italian ice at our table) and hang a "Welcome Home" banner outside of the library windows. We send our college students a little care package before finals in November. We schedule the greeters for our Sunday services. We send out invitations to Special Services such as Rally Day, Christmas, and Easter. If you have any ideas to help make our church more welcoming to the folks that may enter our doors, then you should be on the Welcoming committee!
We are a caring, open community that seeks to share God's love in the world. Our congregation is active and there is a place for everyone. This website has some basic information about the church. If you would like to learn more or speak to one of our staff members, please do not hesitate to Contact Us.
Here at Wilmington United Methodist Church, we have great worship services and many wonderful programs and ministries for all ages. We are located at 87 Church Street, Wilmington, MA. Directions are located on our Contact page.
